Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
